We have a fantastic opportunity to join our exceptional Apprenticeships and Business Development department as an Ophthalmics Technician
As an Ophthalmics Technician you will provide technical assistance to the Ophthalmics team and ensure that all learning environments are safe, compliant and organised across the department.
Responsibilities include:
To take the lead for health and safety practices of the Ophthalmics team.
To participate in:
- Ensuring equipment and stock for Ophthalmics programmes is ordered by the team.
- Ensuring compliance with college procedures and regulations of all team members
- Advise/recommend suitable suppliers
- To ensure that records of goods in stock and goods ordered are maintained across the team.
- To ensure the Ophthalmics rooms are in a tidy and organised state across the team.
To provide technical assistance, including one-off demonstrations on the operation of instrumentation and equipment to teaching staff and students. To move equipment and materials to different locations as required from time to time.
To carry out technical duties appropriate to his/her own skills and to prepare various items of equipment and teaching aids as required. To prepare materials for practical classes and ensure correct disposal of waste.
To ensure that equipment is in a safe and serviceable condition.
To plan routine maintenance and safety checks, and to carry out repairs as needed.
To make recommendations on the purchase of new equipment and on the disposal of old equipment.
To ensure safe storage of materials and equipment within the Ophthalmics areas.

Education & Training
GCSE 4 – 9 or equivalent level 2 qualification in Maths or be prepared to pass a test before the interview to demonstrate level 2 ability and then if appointed achieve within an agreed timescale
GCSE 4 - 9 or equivalent level 2 qualification in English or be prepared to pass a test before the interview to demonstrate level 2 ability and then if appointed achieve within an agreed timescale
A Level 3 Qualification or equivalent in a Science related subject.
IOSH/Health and safety training or qualifications.
Experience
Recent academic or industrial or commercial experience in an area of practical science
Theoretical and practical knowledge to successfully manage the operation of a science prep room.
Proven ability and experience of carrying out risk assessments in line with COSHH.
